First United Presbyterian Church of San Francisco was first established in 1865 as a traditional Presbyterian English congregation. The church has a long history as a community church, ministering to the communities in the
vicinity of its location. In the early 1950s, the church established its present location at 1740 Sloat Blvd., San Francisco. At this location, the English congregation was ministered by the pastorships
of the late Rev. Bill Auld, and the Rev. Peter Yuen. Presently, there is an active Asian American ministry within the traditional English Congregation.
The Taiwanese/Amoy English Bi-Lingual Congregations
In 1979, the Rev. Dr. Noah Chen founded the Taiwanese/ Amoy English Bi-lingual Congregation at the First United Presbyterian Church of San Francisco. This congregation was established
to minister to the spiritual and cultural needs of the Taiwanese community in the Sunset and Richmond Districts of the City. Its ministry in the beginning was focused specifically on first-generation immigrants from Taiwan. Over the years, however, the ministry has also drawn from and served ethnic Chinese immigrants from all over Northeast and Southeast Asia, including China, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Locally, the ministry has grown to include Taiwanese -Amoy speaking immigrants as well as their English speaking offsprings in the Bay Area. Today, after twenty-six years, the Taiwanese/Amoy English Bi-lingual Congregation still provides services in
both Taiwanese-Amoy and in English and ministers to all who seek religious and spiritual guidance, pastoral care, counseling, and a church family.
In 1981, the Rev. Dr. Noah Chen founded the Burlingame Taiwanese-English bilingual congregation at 1500 Easton Drive, Burlingame, California. Through the years, this congregation has grown as a separate congregation geographically, but remains a branch of
the First United Presbyterian Church of San Francisco and maintains the same ministries and mission objectives.
